Welcome to the GEAR EXPO 2007 Experience

By Kurt Medert, Show Manager

Thanks to the many wonderful, positive developments in the City of Detroit over the past several years, the many modifications and enhancements made to GEAR EXPO in recent years, and the many people from the world of gearing who will be in Detroit October 7th to the 10th, your time spent at GEAR EXPO and the many activities surrounding it will be well worth it.

Let’s start with the future of gearing and GEAR EXPO.  The word that immediately comes into my mind is “bright.”  The new technologies do ebb and flow, but they still keep coming, and they still show up at GEAR EXPO.  Look at the wind energy industry – a thriving sector that can’t get enough gears and is looking the world over for them.  A number of companies that sell gears, gear boxes, bearings, etc. to the wind energy manufacturers are exhibiting right inside Cobo Center -- a perfect example of the bright future that gearing, and therefore, GEAR EXPO, are facing!

Now, think about the City of Detroit, now known as the “D.”  This is the city that can now boast of, among many other positive things, that it is “The 2007 Best Sports City in America” according to the Sporting News, a much heralded sports magazine, in its “Best Of” issue, dated August 1, 2007.  There are new restaurants, hotels and casinos, all in the downtown area near Cobo Center and the unique People Mover.  As for the City’s ongoing overall economic development projects are concerned, the City’s Mayor has said “Detroit is deep in the midst of phenomenal growth. Detroit … is now engaged in one of urban America’s greatest revitalization efforts. We’re experiencing tremendous growth along with resuscitation.  Signs of this are evident in every area of our city - in our neighborhoods, industrial corridors, and the central business district.”

GEAR EXPO 2007, which is taking advantage of the bright outlook for the industry and the new “D” by offering up a variety of high-quality education, technology, machinery and the best and brightest people in the gear industry, is here for all of you and your companies.  Please take advantage of the exhibits, the technical sessions of the 2007 Fall Technical Meeting, the concurrent seminars and courses offered by AGMA, ABMA and SME, and one of the most popular features of the Show, which debuted in 2005 – the “Solutions Center.”  Located on the Show floor in the back of the exposition hall, it is free to all who have registered to attend the Show.

The “Solutions Center” is highlighted by two keynote presentations.  On Monday, October 8th, Dr. Mike Bradley, Professor of Economics at George Washington University and AGMA’s Economic Consultant, will present his popular “Gear Market Report.”  On Tuesday, October 9th, Mr. Casey Selecman, Manager, North America Power Train Forecasts of CSM Worldwide, will present the much-anticipated “The Outlook for the Automotive Industry.”

The remainder of the presentations will be given by more than 20 GEAR EXPO 2007 exhibitors covering gearing topics from “Introduction to Direct Gear Design” to “The Manufacturing and Application of Diamond and CBN Tools” to “A Customer Perspective on Gear Software – develop in-house or purchase.”

All in all, there is so much to see, learn and benefit from that GEAR EXPO 2007 will expose you to: best practices; solutions to manufacturing problems; new technologies; ways of increasing productivity; and demonstrations of working machinery – all on the floor of the Show.  In short, you will have an eye-opening GEAR EXPO 2007 “Experience.”  I guarantee it.

Getting to Detroit has Never Been Easier
Detroit is a favorite locale for many trade shows, since it is less than 500 miles from 60% of the U.S.’s population. The city can be accessed through three major interstates, or through its Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which is the hub for Northwest Airlines and the 14th busiest airport in the world.

Discover the New Detroit
Detroit has had a profound impact on the world – from the invention of the automobile to the Motown sound.  The region is currently undergoing a renaissance with new developments and attractions.  Downtown Detroit’s development boom is unparalleled in the country.  More than $20 billion in new development is under way, including new hotels, new restaurants and new attractions.  In fact, the city was recently named by AmericanStyle readers as one of the top 25 arts destinations in the nation.  In addition to the arts and night life Detroit has to offer,  Four casinos located within five miles of each other offer nonstop gaming action: MGM Grand Casino, Motor City Casino, Greektown Casino and Casino Windsor.

Education Programs

There are many reasons why you should attend GEAR EXPO 2007. In addition to the uniqueness of the Show, with its vast array of exhibitors involved specifically in gearing, there will be a strong, gear-related education component with programs that will help you learn more about gearing.

AGMA has organized an enhanced series of meetings, training sessions and seminars of special interest to the gear industry. As a supplement to AGMA’s education programs, two affliated organizations will conduct seminars on current gear-related topics. Plus the “GEAR EXPO Solutions Center” will feature FREE presentations from more than 20 GEAR EXPO 2007 exhibiting companies.
