EUROTRANS History
The concept of creating an international organisation to deal with the common interests of European Mechanical Power Transmissions manufacturers dates back to 1969 when the Syndicate National des Fabricants d'Engrenages et Constructeurs d’Organes de Transmission (at that time called SYNECOT) together with Fachgemeinschaft Antriebstechnik within the German VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e. V.), ASSIOT and ANIMA in Italy and FABRIMETAL in Belgium created EUROTRANS. In the following years similar organisations from Finland, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom joined the association.

EUROTRANS Structure
Today the European Committee of Associations of Manufacturers of Gears and Transmission Parts (EUROTRANS) consists of 6 member associations from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and United Kingdom, being the national Mechanical Power Transmission associations in their respective countries.

Within the EU the member associations represent the interests of more than 600 enterprises with a collective annual production of more than 14 billion EURO ( without the Bearing Industry and the automotive business). Within Europe at least 150.000 people are employed by our sector.

From the formation of EUROTRANS, in 1969 the General Secretariat was based in Brussels until 1972, it then moved to Paris, and since 1st January 1998 onwards it has been located in Frankfurt.

Our activities and daily work were supported by people from the industry. Each member company in the member associations of EUROTRANS can take part in our meetings and projects and can direct improvements in our work.

Eurotrans and the European Economic Community
EUROTRANS has forged close links with the Industrial Affairs Commission of the European Community in Brussels and with ORGALIME, the European Metal Industries Association and the American Gears Manufactures Association (AGMA).

Areas with which the Economic Commission is concerned include:
collecting and disseminating gear and transmission statistics
monitoring unfair competition and dumping
product liability
conditions of sale
Harmonisation of the European national engineering standards for the design and manufacture of gears and transmissions
Members regularly provide statistics based on economic indicators such as inflation, employment and investment prevailing in their own countries.

EUROTRANS - aims
Examine the economic and technical problems relating to the mechanical power transmissions industry
Protect the common interests of Members internationally
Promote the industry world wide.
EUROTRANS does this through its three functional arms. The General Assembly acts as the overall custodian and promoter of the industry. The executive work is done mainly by the Economic and Technical Commissions. Member associations are represented on all three bodies. The President of the General Assembly is an elected position.
